About

Welcome to Mike O’Shaughnessy’s Adult Education blog.

I was born in Nanaimo, BC on May 3, 19xx (long, long ago). I moved to the Lower Mainland/Metro Vancouver in the mid-80s to complete a Computer Systems Diploma at BCIT. After a few years starting our family and careers in greater Vancouver, my wife, our two kids and I moved back to Vancouver Island, to the beautiful town of Ladysmith. While living and working around Ladysmith, I “returned” to BCIT to complete a Bachelor of Technology Degree, mostly online. Continuing our slow migration south, we are all now recently established in the amazing city of Victoria.

After working for about 20 years as a software developer and software architect for Credit Unions, I held my breath and leaped into the entrepreneurial world, launching what is now Centerprise Information Solutions, Inc. Most of the first five years of business involved custom programming of core banking systems. More recently, I’ve been developing and delivering technical training courses for other fintech developers. I love mentoring and teaching, and hope to continue to grow in this area. I’ve recently enrolled in VCC‘s Provincial Instructor Diploma program.  Most of the courses are online, and we’re encouraged to maintain a blog as part of the program. Thus, this.

On a personal note, I play bass, scuba dive, kayak and enjoy exploring the hundreds of Island hiking trails with my wife. We are also becoming involved in humanitarian work in the amazing country of Thailand, and hope to support and engage in teaching there from time-to-time, helping brilliant young people move forward through the gift of education.
